4 Creative Ways to Find Color Inspiration

If you take a design class, you will most likely have to create a color wheel from scratch, especially in something like Art 101. I took a lot of different types of design and color classes in college and this was a tedious task especially with real paint mixing. We even had to make one in my Creative Cloud class. I made so many color wheels that I can’t even count. I started to kind of dread them but now I am thankful that I was forced to do this so many times. It really helps you to learn which colors harmonize with one another. Let me spare you the crazy design professor and give you my 4 tips on finding color inspiration for your posts.

  1. Check out the Pantone website

Pantone comes out with a “Color of the Year” color and multiple color palettes every year. Designers, brands, home interiors, and more utilize these colors for product development. Trend forecasting agencies actually come out with these colors about 2 years in advanced! This is a free site you can check out for your brand and content and it will align with the trending colors of this season’s products and marketing.

  1. Use complimentary colors

Are your brand colors red or pink? Try using green or olive hues to enhance your brand colors.

Maybe you have violet as a main color you use in your marketing so use a golden yellow hue as an accent for your text on and violet image for example. Type “Color wheel” in google to find complimentary colors of any color. The colors that are complimentary are the hues that is straight across from each other on the wheel.

  1. Look at your favorite clothes

As a fashion major, I always find inspiration from prints and textiles. I go into my closet or browse some prints online and see what catches my eye. Next time you’re stuck, just take a peek at your favorite dress that has multiple hues - there is a reason you love it so much and that is because it is a great design!

  1. Take a walk in outside

I always find inspiration in nature. I love taking a walk in the neighborhood and admiring the colors of the flowers, birds or paint colors of the homes and buildings. I live in a neighborhood that has a mix of town charm with city bustle so we have everything from commercial warehouses with street art or a craftsman home with a fresh paint job. Take note of anything that catches your eye and even take a picture with your phone to save for later. You can create a folder in your photo library or make a Pinterest board for your color inspiration.
